Tallinn grew and flourished, thanks to the widespread trade the local merchants engaged in with countries of Western Europe, Russia and the Orient. Enormous wealth was concentrated in the town, which made it possible to ensure work for a great number of craftsmen. They built a castle and raised fortified walls, erected churches and dwelling houses, and created splendid works of art. It is precisely their creations, supplemented by documents and ancient chronicles, that give us and idea of the level of knowledge, aesthetic standards and also some aspects of the material and spiritual life of the town´s inhabitants in those distant times.
